Raye Blumenthal Freedman

Rachel (Raye) Ginsberg was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1909. After an early career as a teacher, she arrived in New Zealand in 1942 to marry Ernest Blumenthal, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Europe. She had $4.00 in her pocket.

A skilled business woman, Raye was involved in a range of business ventures over the years, as well as finding time to work with stroke victims, support the arts, paint, sculpt, ski and spend many happy weekends boating.

A life-long supporter of the Auckland Jewish community, Raye has been a member of both Auckland Hebrew Congregation and Beth Shalom. Deeply committed to Jewish education, she has been a keen supporter of Kadimah College for over 30 years, as well as supporting both B’nei Akiva and Habonim. In the 1980’s, Raye (along with her second husband Mannie Freedman) turned her formidable skills and energy to helping establish Shalom Court.

The Raye Freedman Library owes its existence to the generosity and vision of this remarkable New Zealander.
